Sainsbury’s has stopped selling fireworks due to concern for pets and the elderly

Bonfire Night for most people is a family-friendly fun even, however, for pets and some elderly people a night full of loud noises can be extremely unsettling. For this reason, Sainsbury’s have decided to stop selling fireworks in all 2,300 stores.

The decision comes after growing concern for animal welfare from various charities who have campaigned for a total ban on sales. Crimestoppers’ most recent campaign aims to raise awareness of the night being a “frightening time for many”.

Misuse of firework can also have a negative impact on communities with some areas suffering anti-social behaviours linked to the fireworks.

The decision seemed to be met with a fairly positive response on Twitter, with many customers calling on other supermarkets to do the same.
