One of Glasgow's Oldest Pubs Gets New Owner and Reopening Plan

The new owner of one of Glasgow's oldest pubs, which is set to reopen this spring, has been revealed. Christie & Co has announced that it has successfully secured a new tenant for the Strathduie Bar, located on Blackfriars Street in the Merchant City. The lease has been acquired by Fraser McIlwraith, who, along with his team, plans to revitalise the pub with a modern, fresh approach while maintaining its traditional feel.

Fraser McIlwraith, joined by Adam Strang, David Lockett, and Stuart Kay—who are associated with Vodka Wodka, HOSPO Talent, Liquid Oats, Cocktail Collective, Dark Art Drinks, and The Bevy Store—will reopen the Strathduie Bar in May. The team is committed to providing an unforgettable experience for each guest, whether for a lunchtime pint, a casual evening with friends, or a special occasion. They have worked tirelessly to create a space that honours the venue's history dating back to 1893 while embracing contemporary excitement.

The new operators promise a variety of offerings, including homemade pies, a wide selection of drinks, premium bottled house cocktails, live music, and resident Glasgow DJs on weekends. The Strathduie Bar, with its extensive indoor bar area, lounge, and outdoor space, will reopen with a fresh look in keeping with its historic past. Built in 1893 for publicans J & J McWilliam, wine and spirit merchants, the site has housed a tavern since 1840 and is known for its great sing-alongs.

Simon Watson, Business Agent at Christie & Co, expressed his delight at securing experienced hospitality operators to revitalise the pub. He conveyed his best wishes to Fraser and his team for their new venture. Fraser added, "We’re thrilled to welcome everyone back to Strathduie Bar. Our team has worked tirelessly to create a space that honours the history of the venue while also embracing the excitement of right now."
