Man appears in court after Grassmarket stabbing

A man has appeared in court in Edinburgh in connection with the attempted murder of two women and serious assault on a man who tried to help them.

The women aged 60 and 58 from Northern Ireland, suffered slash and stab wounds in an incident outside their hotel in the early hours of Thursday.

Peter Cameron, of no fixed abode, appeared in Edinburgh Sheriff Court on petition in connection with the incident in the Scottish capital’s Grassmarket area.

He is accused of two counts of attempted murder and one charge of assault to severe injury.

Cameron, 38, made no plea and he was remanded in custody during Friday’s hearing. The case was continued for further examination and Cameron is expected to appear back in court within eight days.

The court appearance followed an incident outside the Apex hotel in the city’s Grassmarket at 3.35am on Thursday.

Two friends from Northern Ireland and a 37-year-old night porter suffered injuries and were treated in hospital for slash and stab injuries.

Police launched a manhunt after the incident when the women, who were wearing their pyjamas and smoking outside the hotel, were injured.

The incident was said to have lasted less than a minute.

Detective Inspector Grant Johnston, from Gayfield CID, said: “As part of this investigation we are reviewing CCTV in the Grassmarket and are keen to hear from any members of the public who were in the area at the time and witnessed what happened, or who can help us trace the suspect.

“In addition, should you have any other information relevant to this inquiry, then please also contact police immediately.”
