Deliveroo to launch a recycle service to tackle takeaways' single plastic use

Deliveroo has announced the launch of a clean and recycle service to tackle plastic containers in Cambridge and Oxford.

The project will be launched in partnership with dry cleaning company, OXWASH, in August. It will allow customers have their containers collected the reused. The scheme will use QR codes to arrange collections or indicate drop-off locations.

Managing director of Deliveroo UK said; “Food delivery is one of the fastest growing industries in the world and at Deliveroo we’re proud to be the innovator, giving customers amazing food, restaurants extra business and riders well-paid work. We’re also proud to be able to extend our innovation to help reduce the usage of plastics and promote recycling to our customers.”

Deliveroo hopes to expand the project into more cities by 2020. This comes after the success of its opt-in button for plastic cutlery, which resulted in a 90% decrease globally, and its eco-friendly packaging shop which offers restaurants biodegradable or recycleable packaging options.
