Burger King launch plant-based burger that isn’t suitable for vegans or vegetarians

Burger King launched their Rebel Whopper on Monday, however, even though it is made from plant-based products, it is not suitable for vegans or vegetarians. The soy-based burger is cooked on the same grill as normal burger, meaning there may be traces of animal products.

The fast food chain claims the burger is aimed at “flexitarians” rather than traditional vegans or vegetarians. Flexitarians are people that aim to cut down the animal products they eat, but not completely cut it out.

However, the move was praised by international head of communications of Veganuary. Toni Vernelli said that it made no difference that the burger was cooked on the same grills because ultimately it might persuade non-vegans to reduce their animal product consumption. Citing it is also a good move for animal and environmental reasons.

The Rebel Whopper is now available on the Burger King app and will be available in UK stores on Wednesday.
