Edinburgh Fringe Festival voted 'top travel experience' in the UK

The Fringe has been voted number one by practised tourists who were asked to rate their most memorable travel experiences within the UK. It came first of 500 in a list compiled by Lonely Planet.

Lonely Planet's Ultimate United Kingdom Travelist said: Nowhere beats it for spectacle or scale ... there is theatre, comedy, dance, circus, cabaret, opera, music and spoken word, and whatever the time of day, an acrobat, trapeze artist, contortionist or tried-and-tested bagpiping busker will be pleased to entertain you."

Cheif executive of the Edinburgh Festival, Shona McCarthy, said the praise was "a true testament to the creativity, energy and imagination that Fringe artists and audiences bring to Edinburgh each year".

The travel guide has a total of 67 entries from Scotland, including Glencoe and Arthur’s Seat.

The list was compiled by including every highlight from the Lonely Planet guidebooks for Great Britain and Northern Ireland, then asking writers to rate their best experiences.
