Xpress jobs – who, what, where? Speak to a recruiter!

You want a job in hospitality generally, or catering, hotel work, management, sales, retail or fmcg.  You Google ‘Hospitality jobs Scotland”.  Or you look up Caterer or S1 or Totaljobs or Reed or Indeed. 

All fine – all sensible.  If you start with Google you’ll almost certainly find us, somewhere on page one of your search.  If you look up the job-boards you’ll find Xpress jobs there, in abundance.  You’ll also find lots of other jobs of course, but we’d obviously prefer you to look at ours!  

If you are serious about job-hunting in the hospitality sector, then you are, of course, right to do all the above.  Yet we’d like to suggest there is one thing more you should do.  You should talk to a good recruitment consultant.  Just like the job-boards, you’ll find there is a good range to choose from.  We’d obviously like you to talk to us, but we are realistic enough to know that not everyone will.  However, we would encourage you to take some time to talk to a least one professional recruiter.

Why?  Simple really.  Good recruitment consultants have lots of experience and can help you get a better job.  If, like Xpress, they are hospitality specialists, they’ll employ headhunters with substantial experience of all the various disciplines in the industry, from chefs to chauffeurs and finance to front-of-house (and all jobs between and beyond).

More pertinently, a good recruitment consultant will know where the ‘hidden’ jobs are – that substantial percentage of new vacancies that are not made public – and be able to advise you accordingly.  He or she will also offer helpful hints as to how best to present yourself, in person and on your CV, based on real, inside-knowledge of the client, what their likes, foibles and sometimes eccentricities are and how best to manage these at interview.  At the very least, they must have a conversation with you, either in person or over the phone. Skype is increasingly used nowadays because the consultant and candidate can see each other and form a better idea of how they can work together to achieve their mutually beneficial goals.

In addition, a good recruiter can also give you information about the market in general – why a particular firm is struggling to hire (it may be there is a ‘problem’ there), what to expect from a new company who are seeking to make their mark, and much more.

We’d all like the process of getting a new role to be an “xpress job”, where you simply find what you want, are interviewed, get the job and start on Monday!  The real world isn’t like that.  You get out what you put in.  So, even if it’s not with Xpress, do go and talk to a recruitment expert. Your work is a substantial part of your life and the time spent is never wasted: you’ll get it back in spades when you get a job where you really know you and the company are a great fit.
