7% wage growth across hospitality industry

Advertised pay for hospitality roles grew by an average of 7.1% in 2018, data compiled by job site CV-Library has revealed.

The increase in the industry’s take-home pay saw average salaries stand at £28,850 per annum. Hospitality was the second-highest growing sector assessed, tied with marketing jobs for growth in pay and lower only than legal work, which experienced a 7.6% increase in average salaries.

CV-Library founder Lee Biggins said: “Throughout 2018 there was a great deal of competition for businesses to attract and secure the most talented hospitality professionals, hence why the sector has seen such a jump in pay.”

It comes as the staffing crisis in hospitality continues to bite. In June last year, the number of people employed in the industry fell year on year for the first time since the recession.

ONS figures showed the average number of people working in the accommodation and food service sectors in the 12 months to June 2018 was 18,000 fewer than the previous year.

This was coupled by a decline in the number of migrant workers entering the country from the EU in the wake of Brexit. In November, ONS figures revealed some 19,000 more EU nationals left the country in Q2 when compared to the previous year, continuing the steep rise in EU migrant outflow that began in 2016.
